I recently installed linux (after much difficulty)

On my computer with
a 40gb hard drive
2ghz proccesor
500mb ram

And something odd is happening.
I logged in but i got stuck at a brown gradient screen with a mouse!
So i couldnt do anything.

WHat should i do?!
Can I downgrade to a more stable version?

Which one?

Thanks,
Joseph

Which distribution have you installed and what is it's version?
Suse, Slackware, Ubuntu, Debian, fedora, centos, redhat, mandriva ?

The way you explain it, you are in a X session (graphical interface) but nothing starts.

Ubuntu 8.10

I fixed it once but disabling graphics or something.
Bit i didnt want to disable all the fancy graphics.
I think it was called xamin or something.

Should i install ubuntu 6.06
I hear its really stable?

Edit:
Its called compiz!
I use this code:
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
To remove it but then I dont have the special effects. So i want to find a way that works but everything works like normal.

Do you have a supported 3D video card? You'll need it. This page lists some cards known to work. I know there's a list of compatible cards somewhere (I'd start at the Ubuntu site) but I couldn't find it quickly.

If you're having this problem, it's fairly likely your card isn't supported and you're out of luck. Ubuntu works great (and runs faster) without the eye candy. : )

as far as I know, ubuntu 8.1 already has everything needed without adding compiz.
Or compiz is already there, I don't know. I haven't played with those eye candy for the last 2 years.
It's pretty at first, but annoying after 3 minutes...

Anyway, to enable it, do a right click over the desktop, choose "change desktop background", go on the tab "visual effects" and make your choice.
