I think Microsoft wants to take advantage of people by using it until the coming August. It seem they want to avoid the failure of vista.

Windows 7 is enormously fast.

A friend of mine is running the newest 7 beta in a dual-boot config with Windows XP, and 7 boots probably twice as fast as XP does. Vista I'm sure was slower than XP for most people so this says great things about Vista -> 7.

I think W7 will have over Vista what XP had over Windows 2000, they rushed when releasing vista and it was known long before it would be very bad. W7 has learned from Vista’s mistakes and is much more promising. But why stick with such bad OS when you can use Linux? Give it a try, it’ll surprise how well it works.

You can always just download the beta and find out for yourself:

Microsoft is trying to make Windows 7 a mix breed between the visually appealing Vista and the performance of XP.

It's too early to tell, as Windows 7 is still beta. I'm waiting for full release before I try it.

Lets go back in time about 9 years. In the year 2000 there was windows 95, windows 98 first edition, windows 98 second edition, NT 4 workstation, windows 2000 professional and lastly - ME was just about to be released. In the near future XP will soon be released.

Lets fast forward back to 2009.

Windows ME is no longer supported and windows 98 first edition has been forgotten about. Windows 98 second edition was supported long after ME was forgotten about. Windows 2000 is still used at the corporate level and people are clinging into XP with an iron grip.

Lets look into the future 3 years.

The year is 2012, windows XP is still used at the corporate level, vista is the laughing stock of microsofts operating systems (just like ME). Windows 7 is well established and respected.

Every other, or every third OS that Microsoft makes is a failure.

Windows 98 first edition - epic fail

Windows ME edition - epic fail of an epic fail.

Windows vista - super epic fail that the people at microsoft would love to forget about.

Its just a matter of time before people start comparing ME and vista and which one was worse.

To answer your original question, do not waste your time on vista, just go straight onto windows 7. In 3 or 4 years, if you mention vista, people might laugh at you.

I wouldn't call Vista a massive failure. I used to hate Vista until I purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium on it, and I quite enjoy Vista now.

Microsoft appears to be making an attempt to redeem itself after Vista.
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/11/238222

Microsoft is trying to encourage people who are planning on getting a new PC to buy now rather than later. With windows 7 due in december it would seem that now would be the worst time to buy a PC so microsoft is offering free upgardes for Vista users.

Its unclear from the article whether this would apply to people who already own vista machines or just those that buy after the upgrade program goes into effect. The article does mention that OEM participation is optional, so if the OEM is not participating in the program and you purchase a Vista PC from them, no upgrade for you.

XP with SP3! Will be the best solution.

Windows 7 is not completed and fully tested yet. Vista is definetely not a successful OS - too slow and complicated, lots of unnecessary features, you'll never use.

I am still using XP, but I am waiting the final release of Windows 7. Sounds very promising as I don't embrace Vista.
