A buddy of mine just told me a problem with his PC. He has a regular DVD ROM and a DVD RW drive. He was able to burn a movie and the following day his drives came up as not being recognized. He went in to the device manager and they are showing up, but with the yellow exclamation. It says that the drivers are either corrupt or missing. He’s gone in and tried reinstalling drivers and nothing fixes it. He’s even reinstalled Windows XP to see it that could fix it under repair mode. I can’t think of anything else to try. Any suggestions?

Did it come unplugged or something. He might want to check that or maybe the drive died.

No, he checked the plugs and everything is secure. He even switched to a different IDE socket on the mother board and the same thing comes up.

It's not the drives, because he plugged ina known working CD ROM and the same thing happened. It's looking like maybe he might have to nuke the HD and start from scratch. But then if the ROM's are not recognized how will he install Windows?

He put in brand new cables too. Sorry, I forgot to mention that. I think I am just going to recommend him taking it to a computer shop and see if they can figure it out........

He's gone to the sites of the MFG's and downloaded the firmware, but when he goes to run the updates, they can't 'find' the drive to update it. It's really wierd. Believe me, the most obvious things have been tried and re-tried. It has to be something really lame that caused it.

Hey, I have an idea, I actually work with PCs all the time. It turns out you can’t really download drivers for CD or DVD drives, they come with windows. And updating the firmware can easily render your drives unusable.

You could try putting the drives on another PC with windows xp and copy the drivers from that one, then on the original one do the driver update and give it the ones you copied.
