Hi,

I think I have a trojan in the house. Yesterday an annoying window began popping up in the lower right corner of the screen saying it was something to do with Microsoft security, said I had been infected with a virus and if I want it removed I have to pay money. Now the computer is almost unusable, as this stupid window keeps appearing every 30 seconds or so. I did a system scan with BitDefender which identified it, but did not seem to remove it. Also ran Spybot with the same result. Is there any way to remove this rotten thing, or do I have to reformat my laptop. I saw some software called "Trojan Remover 6.7.5.2562, but thought I would ask in the forum before downloading anything.
Iam using Windows XP Home edition.
Thanks in advance, Mickmac

Turn OFF system restore before doing ANY scanning or removal.

download hijackthis and use that remove some spyware.

Use spybot in "Safe Mode" and have it run a scan before windows starts.

Use msconfig to turn off the start up items that shouldn't be there.

Use regedit to remove unknown entries from the "Run" sections

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run\

and the same node in HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Sounds like the Internet antivirus trogan.

If what Chris suggested does not work download malwarebytes (free version) and it will remove the bugger.

You can also download superantispyware to help out. I use it and it catches a bunch of stuff that adaware and spybot don't.

Do everything that chrishirst said, and download and install malware malbytes from download.com. After you get malware / malbytes installed do a full system scan.

If you do not have a real anti-virus, get AVG free edition while you are on download.com.
