I'm not really sure how this works. I have cable internet. I want to hook up a wireless network so I can use my laptop anywhere in the house. I'm not sure what hardware to buy. Are there any brands of router to stay away from and are there any that are cut above the rest?

You need a wireless router. There are many good brands in the market, use google for reviews. D-link, Linksys etc. all good in low price range

go with Netgear routers, you can find them at Wal-Mart. They're affordable and great routers.

I use a 6 - 7 year old Netgear wireless router. Its so old it uses the "B" standard.

I like netgear first, and linksys second. Even though linksys is "supposed" to have this wide range with "N" technology, I have seen the new linksys routers not work past 75 feet. Even though a lot of people like linksys, I feel that their range leaves a lot to be desired. Why can't we get a brand new router that will work past 100 feet through 3 walls? When my 6 year old netgear works just fine at 60 feet through 2 walls and with an older wireless standard.

If you do go with linksys, make sure the router has the replaceable antennas. That way you can replace the factory antenna with a high gain after market product. Some of the linksys routers have some kind of built in antenna, try to stay away from them.

Belink seems to be a good wireless router.

I recommend for you the D-Link Wireless Router. Do you have a printer which is plugged into a computer? If you have a printer please don't forget the best solution a D-Link Wireless router which is include the printer server with a different IP inside your internal network. However you can buy also an external printer server tool but it would be additional fee. I think the cheapest if it's built in originally.

I have a belkin for over 2 years now, no problems at all.

I am using a Linsys also and its great. Has a nice admin section where you can customize some of the settings and easy enough for you to upgrade the firmware yourself without paying their technical fees they charge to walk you through it.

I find the Netgear GT to be more than good enough, stay clear of the thomson/speedtouch ones though.

Linksys is the best. Make sure you adjust the security measures properly so no one can hack inot your internet and donload music.

I am using Linksys, and it's amazing.. no problems till date, and their after sales support is great.

D-link is good and pries does not pricey

i have been using it from the past 2 and a half years and i can use my laptop any where in the house it is really very convienient. you can also a get a 2-in-1 modem and a router together also

I suggest you ONLY Linksys or Cisco. Cisco are expensive but the best. Linksys are the right choice.
Do not buy cheap one like D-Link, you will regret they have low security and few functionalities.
If you want some infos on Netgear read here and think by yourself.
