Hey, I have just received 2x1GB RAM sticks through the post.

However once installed my physical memory is only 990MB however my virtual memory seems to show 2GB.

I am pretty sure my physical memory should be at 2GB.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

Thanks a lot, Ash~

Crucial test said i could hold up to 1GB in each slot.

i tried them in comp individually and they worked so i dont understand why my physical memory is still 990.

Make sure the memory is properly seated in the slots. For a tower case that means laying it on its side while inserting the memory.

It is very easy to do it wrong.

First of all tell us about your computer specs? If its an old one then there should be limit of ram you can install in your machine.

The Crucial active-x script does a very good job of reading the board signature, slots and even the number of empty slots. I doubt that is the problem.

I would not care much about this.
Probably a small part of that ram is reserved for the addressing, and it's the reason why you don't see it.

I have to say that I'm surprised that you see that value, as there is the "salesmen" capacity versus "real" capacity effect.

An official "gigabyte" definition is 10^9 bytes => 1'000'000 bytes
But, as computer works on a base 8 (octal) system, and not decimal, you cannot achieve 1'000'000 bytes.
The closest is 1024 (2^10), thus leading that 1'000'000/1024 => 976'562 Mo
Do the same for the Mo to Ko (976'562/1024), and you'll find 953'000 Ko...

So, I would have less surprised if your soft told you that you had 950Mo available, rather than 990...

Well i have tried re installing it numerous times making sure there is no dust and is clean.

From what crucial and other programs tell me my motherboard is a Jetway 866AS ULTRA

I can try and get a more specific name later.

I think its the motherboard's fault. Its quite old. Maybe it has problems with so much memory, or is not compatible.

I agree there, that MB model must be 7 or so years old.

There should be three slots on that board.

A faulty memory slot can show up as 'empty', but the first thing to address would probably be the discrepancy between what you observe to be two RAM slots and a motherboard with three per specs.

One RAM slot may not be certainly working. Require hardware technician's help.

I haven't really seen anyone state the obvious here. It could just be a bad memory stick (these things happen.) Install one stick, reboot. If there are no problems, remove it and do the same with the other. Like other people have said, it could also be the Motherboard. If its as old as you say, you should probably upgrade it anyways.

if you'd read the post then you would see that they tried the sticks individually

I would say it's a bad slot. Try only one in one of your slots, boot and check it. Then test the other slot the same way. If one stick shows in both slots then your MB doesn't have the capacity to utilize more than one gig and you need to upgrade the MB if you really want more than that.

Why is everyone making it so complicated.

Ok is the computer plugged in? I'm just kidding.

There's just too many things that can go wrong. Hard to say.

Try installing 1 stick of ram in one slot and boot up the pc to see if the computer recognizes that stick of ram. If it does, then install that same stick of ram in the other slot , leaving the first slot empty. If the computer recognizes this same stick of ram, then the motherboard should be ok. Now do the same thing with the other stick of ram to see if the computer can recognize it. This will tell you whether or not you have a bad ram stick.
