I've recently upgraded to Vista, I've tried Vista many times before but this time im running 64bit and every other time I've used Vista its wound me up so much because of performance.

Vista has just been installed, totally fresh install, legit disk. It's using around 890MB of RAM.

Does anyone have any tips to reduce the RAM usage in Vista?

1Gig of ram is really the bear minimum for vista. The only things I can think of would be to get rid of any UI effects.

A 64-bit OS improves performance only in that it allows you to have more memory. Memory addresses are now twice as long, so on low end systems you are actually likely to experience a performance decrease rather than an increase.

Search around Google for vista performance tweaks.

The first step is disabling Windows Aero if you need the performance. Also there is a list of services that can be disabled to increase vista performance.

My opinion is, use better harware for vista. On my pc i am using XP and Vista both as dual boot. XP runs much faster than vista in some cases.

You need at least 4 gigs of ram to have Vista not affect your computer speed.

Install as much RAM as the machine will handle, it's a really cheap option right now.

The two programs which you may not use that take a lot of mem are the sidebar and search indexer. Turn these off and you will see a noticeable drop in mem usage.

Also for service tweaks look at Black Vipers website (Google search) he has a great list of which services you can safely turn off at start up.

Turn off the start up services. To do this goto Start > Run, type services.msc and hit Enter. Click on the service you want to get rid of and change the startup type to Disable.

Also defrag your computer, and download CCleaner.

One of the easiest ways, which may cost you 20 bucks or so, is to go buy a decent sized flashdrive and use readyboost to speed up your computer. That is probably the easiest thing you can do.

I hope this helps.

Plug USB flash and allow Vista use that. I believe that will help you but that is not a problem solving in any case

Yes XP SP3 is the happy medium. It's also very stable. I don’t have any problems with it.

I would suggest to bump up your ram to speed up the process in Vista cause Vista eats up a lot of memory.

I lol'd.

Defrag the hard drive, go to program files and delete all the junk and empty folders, hopefully Windows 7 will be a great improvment.

Why don't you just download the windows 7 release candidate?

This is one major reason why I had my notebook downgraded to XP. Vista is particularly slow even if I use a DDR3 RAM. I guess just use another OS for your PC?

win7 and 2GB ram are where it's at, way better results than with a completely stripped down version of vista...
