Linux handles quite well on many of the new computers -- that said, you definitely shouldn't have any problems with linux on older systems. Linux is really good on older hardware but over the last few years (from what I was told, and from experience) linux has updated their hardware detection system quite well. I even have my linksys hardware running on my linux box (linksys hardware didn't work quite well in the earlier days of linux)...I do however still have a problem with my laptop camera in linux, I had it working once before but it was a pain to get, since then I did without the cam.  Who cares.
Btw, Linux is not just known for it's excellent command line abilities, now most distros have a graphical user interface. Fear not the power of linux, harness it, and you shall prosper!
