I have set up a home network between my tower and laptop. Now I want to allow 1 network user (laptop) to access certain files. I have turned off the use simple file sharing feature.
But I am not sure how add the network user. I right click the folder, select properties then the security tab. But I can only find users on this computer, or the everyone feature. I do not want everyone to have access. Just my laptop.
Can anybody help? Thats Windows XP x64.

When you add a new user, you just need to use same login details when trying to access file from remote PC.
So if you create a new login "laptopt" and use this username to login from remote PC, then remote user will have permissions assigned to user "laptop"

I dont think you can set file level permissions in windows - I know you can not on anything between windows 95 - XP, I'am just not sure about windows 7 since I do not use it.
Create a folder, share the folder, set the permissions, then put the files in the folder you want to share.
Make sure both computer have the same user accounts and passwords.

You can only set file permissions on NTFS filing systems.
So NT4.0, Win2K, XP and Windows 7 provided you are NOT using FAT or FAT32.

Yep everything is cool now.. Just had to play around for a few days and have got it how I want now. Got a couple of folders set for full control through network. And others are set to read only (media etc).
Cheers peeps!!

I'm afraid your knowledge is out of date a little. Windows OS isn't that bad, it supports file permissions since old Windows NT.

With the use of usb flash drives, why bother using this outdated method of file sharing? If you are looking to get the network experience, perfect practice makes perfect. Then again, with many different file systems out there, you may want to know how to do it that way as well, if you plan on running a lan, otherwise you will need to make sure the filesystem you drives are in are the same as the operating system you are trying to use it on.

How are network "shares" outdated by "USB Flash Drives"?

Completely wrong.
On a LAN the files could be on a *nix machine, Windows NT4, XP, 2K, 95, 98, Win7, Mac OS etc and be accessible by them all SIMULTANEOUSLY!!.
Using USB drives is just a newer variation of the 1970s "SneakerNet" file sharing "technology"

Maybe I mis-understood you, but If I take a fat32 formatted usb drive and plug it into my brothers Macintosh, it won't read it unless I convert the file system first (which will require data loss). However, there was (is?) a tool that would allow reading windows file systems on mac which I was able to do a couple of years ago, but haven't been able to since. Now with linux and windows, I don't seem to have too much of a problem, that's because I utilize a virtual windows environment inside linux, and the linux distro that I use is fairly new so it pretty much reads my usb's flawlessy.

Sure, FAT & FAT32 can be read by most OSs and MAC OS X can read NTFS. However this still means that only ONE person at at one time can access the file(s)
