Hi- I have a question in regards to IP addresses. If I got mine changed by my internet company, can my old IP address still be tracked if someone knows it on the internet or is in no longer in effect. This sounds silly but I wrote a mean to email to my boss from an anonomyouse email address but from my personal computer. I am scared he can track my IP address from the email and figure out it is me! so i had my IP address changed. Can he still track it??

Yes the IP can be tracked back to an user by the ISP if they are given the time, date, IP No and justifiable cause to do so.

If you have got internet access through a modem (landline phone) or adsl, then your IP address changes at least each day.
If you are connected through cable modem, it can last much longer

But your alone cannot track it, no.
Or to be precise, he can only track it to your ISP, no further.
And given each time someone connect, a random IP address is served from a pool of free ip's, it can be anyone that is a customer to that ISP.

Usually, at least in my place (Europe) ISP are not allowed to disclose who is behind a given IP at a given time if there is no police investigation going on.

But then again it may not.

It will depend on the DHCP settings at your ISP, some may only change when you disconnect and reconnect.

If you use AOL your IP could change every time you access a page or refresh a page.

It may be so in your case. Other ISPs may provide you with a static IP.

I'm on dynamic IP, but they are changed approximately every 3 month.
It's not because you get several time the same that you have a fixed ip, it may be the DHCP lease that serves you the same based on your MAC address.

I am using dynamic IP and my IP changes every time I restart my modem. As other have said you can track upto the ISP but not further then that. If you want to track the person then ISP can help but personal effort on finding the person is really really hard.
