I have been browsing ebay for a USB enclosure for a spare hard drive I have found but I was confused by the sizes and types (SATA, eSATA...).

I really dont know much about hard drives so I am asking for some help.

This is the hard drive I have, what will I need to look for in an enclosure?

Or can I simply install this HDD into the PC and use it as extra memory that way?

Your drive is ATA 133 so you need a USB - IDE enclosure.


eSATA would require your computer to have an "External SATA" connector

HDDs are NOT "extra memory" they are storage!

But yes you probably could IF you have a free IDE channel in your machine.

What size will I need? 2.5 or 3.5?

As far as I know the Diamond Max was never produced in 2.5 in (laptop drive size) so I would suggest 3.5. BUT is you use a rule and measure it you will know for sure.

Got one of those

For 3.5" drives it needs a PSU with it.

I have two of these on my desk with 500 Gb Maxtor drives in them.
