Hi,
I don't really think the OS should be a factor when trying to learn programming. You should just start with an OS you are comfortable with.

Thanks,
James

Depends of the coverage of the language too.
I'm forced to work with VB.net, and try to do anything with that on Linux.

If the tools (editor, reference, compiler) are available on your favorite OS, then go for it.
Otherwise, you will need to adjust to the requirements of the language.

I think its windows XP.
It is the most commonly used Operating system now. So most of the softwares are compatible with xp. So everyone prefer to use XP over Linux or any other OS.

I believe you need to chose the most popular one not the one which is the easiest.

It depend on an individual for which programming they want to go. If you want to go with easy accessibility then according to me windows will be fine and if you are looking for advanced programming then I would like to recommend you to go with Solaris as it has really got some great features.

What do you mean by 'advanced programming' and what special features are you referring to. I've never used solaris, but I switch freely between windows and ubuntu and I wouldn't say either of them has a significant advantage over the other.

The only time I NEED a particular OS is when the code must be compiled for that OS and even then the source code doesn't take much altering to compile under a different OS. I know that some Solaris machines run on the SPARC architecture rather than the x86, does this make a significant impact on the portability of code (I'm referring to higher level code, obviously assembly code won't be portable at all)?

Depends on your programming language. I wouldn't recommend Unix for Visual Basic or Visual Studio.
