Still using the pentium 4 up to this time so far its doing good but planning to upgrade to dou core. Many said its just almost the same better to upgrade to quad core but I just don't have budget this time...any tips or help that you can suggest? thanks
Will a modern processor even be able to use the same socket as a P4 (even if it can it probably won't operate as well as it could), or are you getting a new motherboard as well?
If you go with an AMD you get more performance per dollar (quad core goes for about $150-$200). With intel you can get more performance overall, but at a higher cost. You can probably get 6-core AMD for about the same price as a 4-core intel.
If you really can't decide between a dual core and a quad core, you can always go with a 3 core processor. I think you'll find that unless you have a lot of processes working at the same time most of the time you'll only be using 1 core.
The Pentium 4 CPU range covered two socket technolgies (478 & 775), those two are not compatible so newer Intel CPUs such as the i5 & i7 are certainly not.

As far as parallel threading goes I think it's a great invention - if software actually makes use of both cores. You'll find that many tools don't but a Duo Core is a good investment none the less. Also be sure to care for enough memory and a fast hard drive with the latter very often being the actual bottleneck.
Have you though about selling your current solution and getting new one instead. I believe that would better and softer.

Duo core is just a bit faster than P4 and yes they are right its just the socket that are different but if you can afford a i7 its way more better and newer.
Duo core is way over Pentium 4, first!
Second, what will you do with a quad core? There are numerous applications that still do not use even dual core, what to say about a quad?
Depends what you are going to be using it for, If the P4 is going to handle everything why spend more on a dual core, I still use a HT P4 on my workstation and I have no desire to change it, because there is just no point.
