Hey, guys. Long time listener, first time caller :-)

I just built a new computer (specs below.) I am having problems getting Windows 7 to install.

Here is my issue:

First, I am booting from the DVD-ROM since there is no OS on the HDD. After powering up, Windows will take me to the first screen (Windows is Loading Files.) It will load the files fine, but then it moves to the next screen (Starting Windows,) and it locks up. Every time. I can't get passed that point.

I did some research and there were several different fixes listed. I tried disabling all non-essential peripherals (USB, Firewire, eSata, etc.) I also tried removing all non-essential Hardware (Mouse, one of my Graphics cards, 2 Memory modules.)

One forum post I found said that it may be because Windows can not load the drivers for my Motherboard.

I should also point out that I have replaced the DVD-ROM and still get the same problem. I do not have a replacement HDD to test that out.

If anyone can help with this issue, I will love you for life.

My setup:

Intel QX6850 Core 2 Extreme
nForce 680i Mobo
2 Asus 480 GTX Graphics Cards
750GB Western Digital HDD
4 XMS2 Corsair 2GB DDR2 Modules
Silencer 750 Watt PSU

Are you sure it's locking up? On a couple of installs of Windows 7 I've done recently, it tends to appear hung, but I gave it some more time and it completed fine.

Another problem is the system is all new hardware, so it won't be easy to narrow down any faulty hardware (if that is the case).

If you have any additional memory you can try in it, that would be a good start.

Yup, I am sure that it is hung up. I let it sit for over an our on the Starting Windows screen and nothing. My DVD-ROM light also stops blinking.

I do only have one monitor at the moment. Since I don't have any drivers, I am going bare essentials.

Also, I decided to update my BIOS in case that might be the problem. So I went to EVGA and downloaded the BIOS update and put it on a bootable CD. It boots from the CD and I get this message:

1. FD 2.88MB System Type-(00)

There is a flashing cursor under that message and it won't accept any commands. I have a ticket in with EVGA but there is no telling when they will get back to me. Who would have thought that when building a computer, installing Windows would be the biggest problem?

Hello Friends
Have you tried removing your installation media (Windows 7 DVD/USB) when it restarts for the first time after the first
install screen, and see what happens?

Thanks,
James

I found the problem. As it turns out, it was the Bios that needed to be flashed. For some reason, the program that I used didn't create the bootable disk properly. When I switch to another program and made another disk, it flashed the Bios and I was able to install Windows the first time around.

For anyone else having a similar problem, according to Asus, the problem resolves around Windows 7 not recognizing (or having) the proper drivers for my Sata connections on the Mobo, and it was locking up when trying to read the DVD-ROM and HDD (both are Sata devices.) The recommendation they gave me was to install Windows Vista or Windows XP and then install Windows 7 on top of that. However, I was able to flash the bios and didn't need to do that.

Anyways, thanks for all the help guys.

Yup I've done that. Nothing happens because Win 7 is already installed in your computer.

Well, I tried to install 7 three times today in a partition on my second hard drive. I spend most of the installation of a fine to a certain point in the installation complete the game. My PC restarts and appears to load Windows 7 and goes to a black screen with Windows 7 info at the bottom right corner. My mouse is visible and mobile, but there is nothing to click, and I can not reset the PC soft. 7 I tried to load in safe mode, but I get an error message that says I can not complete the installation in safe mode, which means no OS installed yet. When I arrived at F12 in the boot screen and have access to the DVD, which brings me back to the whole process instead of continuing. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?
