Did the PSU in my computer go bad?

This morning I tried to turn on my brand new computer which is only about 5 months old and I heard this loud "pop" noise. When I tried to press the button again it failed to turn on. So I'm guessing one of the components went bad. Luckily I kept my old computer which is why I'm able to get back online. However, I would prefer to use my new one because it's significantly faster and has Windows 7. I've been checking around on the internet and I believe the problem is probably my PSU. At least hopefully that's it. Can anyone tell me whether a popping noise is what typically happens when a PSU blows? I believe my computer uses a 300W PSU so will any one work? They have ones on Ebay that are as cheap as $5. However, I think it would be smart to get a slightly better one.

CPU or PSU? because they are two very different things!

And a five months surely it is still in warranty?

Actually, after mentioning that I just realized that I have a 1 year manufacturer's warranty. Hopefully that warranty will cover any problems.

It all depends what "blows", different components make different kinds of "popping" noises

Capacitors make a "spluttery bang"

Rectifiers make a "sharp crack" sound.

The switching transistors a "fizzily splut" kind of noise.

And more often than not they don't die "cleanly" and "kill" something else at the same time.

BTW One thing I forgot to mention is that the loud popping noise occurred a couple of weeks ago when I tried to turn the computer on.
