I don't know to be honest. I think macs use ATI, and the graphics we get on them are awesome.

They are both good companies, right now I have ATI, but in the past I had Nvidia, no complaints and worked fine. Other people here might have a different opinion.

The order goes like this:

nVidia > ATI > Intel.

I think that depends on your point of view. Typically with ATI you get more performance per dollar, however the high end nVidia cards are better than any ATI card. I'd say if you want the absolute best performance, go with nVidia. Of course you may have to sell a kidney and unless you keep your machine for 10 years you'll never encounter a situation where you need that kind of performance

nVidia has got the edge at the moment - ATI then comes out with a better card and so it goes on. They are both very good companies and deliver good products

You don't need a high end graphics card to run photoshop. As far as I know photoshop doesn't utilize your graphics card any more than Microsoft Word does. Your CPU and memory are much more important.

In any case, both ATI and nVidia have separate lines of processors for non-gaming purposes:

Even the most intensive 3D designing programs utilize your CPU more than your GPU.

The CPU = the bottleneck.

Ye gods, you do fall for the sales pitches don't you?

"High end" Graphic tools need memory on or available to the card to allow for higher resolutions and colour depth not "on board processors"

I have an ATI HD4870, pretty good for playing cod, bfbc2 and a few other relatively new games.

it's like comparing apples and oranges really, there are ATI cards better than nvidia, and there are nvidia cards better than ati.

But if you're just going by widescale support, I think nvidia takes the cake because it's probably slightly ahead in terms of widescale support. I've had some video editing applications that had some special effects reserved for nvidia for instance [i dont really use cheesy special effects], also some webcam software have on screen effects that require nvidia

But both are still pretty equal IMO.

In terms of cross compatibility, ps2 uses nvidia, and xbox uses ATI. So games developers still have to build games for both chips.

For gaming, just go with the card which offers the better performance regardless of whether it's by ATI or nVidia. For support and drivers that don't mess up constantly, stick to nVidia. If you're a Linux user, stick to nVidia. If you use a Mac, you'll be with ATI regardless.

In my opinion it's nvidia and then ati, but I can't trully say nvidia is better then ati. this depends on the preference of a person.
