This a junk question but just in case anybody reads it.

It is the broadcast antenna and signal strength that determines the coverage radius.

While a high gain antenna can help with weak signals, trying to "piggyback" on wireless carriers from "home" routers at more than 100/150 metres (300/450 yards) will be unlikely to have much success.

Is that what they used to call "WarDriving" before broadband became so cheap that everybody had it?

Sort or
WaRDriving was the practice of driving around city centres to find open Wireless Access Routers to piggyback on.

Similarly with WaRchalking, which was leaving a symbol on building or the pavement (sidewalk for the merry cans) in chalk where a open W.A.R. was found.

Thanks, Chris. I always wondered where that name came from.
