ok,im new to mac, ive had my macbook pro for about a month now and in that time i have only ever restarted it when prompted after installing new software. other than that i just close it when i goto sleep and open it again when i awaken.

after all this time its still running as smooth and fast as ever. but by doing this would it effect my machine in any way over time. ?

No.

Servers run for months on end without even "sleeping".

Screens don't suffer from "burn" anymore.

Only thing to be aware of, as with any other laptop, is to keep the air vents clear of dust and lint, and every six months power down and clean the fan impellor, ESPECIALLY if you smoke anywhere near the machine.

All machines, laptops do pick up fibres, hair and dust because they are used in close proximity to clothing.

Cigarette smoke particles are very "sticky" and will build up on the impellor blade edges and reduce the airflow efficiency dramatically.

Cleaning the insides of a computer that has been used where people smoke while using it is not a pleasant for a non-smoker and I've put many people off from smoking near thei computers by showing what builds up on the heatsink. Though it never seems to make them realise that it does exactly the same in their lungs.

Shake 'n' Vac (other carpet freshening products are available) is another computer fan killer, so turn your computer off before vacuuming around.

AND a tobacco smoke particle is around twice the size of the gap between the hard drive platter and the read/write heads, so if the smoke enters via the HD "breather" it can cause a catastrophic collision between head and platter resulting in physical damage and data loss.

As less you turning off your PC/Mac, as longer it's lives.

Every time you turning on machine, it's getting "electrical" shock, which kills it on long run basis.

like bulb which will be never turned off will have longer life than bulb you turning off each day couple times.

Just get ready to pay more electricity bills if you don't want to close.

I've been dealing with computers a long while, well before having a 3 1/2 floppy gave you bragging rights.

wow didn't know you could have any bragging rights with a "3 1/2 floppy"

it certainly is good to clean your pc though - my last motherboard died from dust build-up since then i clean my machine regularly.

Oh yeah, the earlier 5 1/4" floppy discs only held 360kb, with a 3 1/2 drive that went WAY up to a whopping 1.44 Megabytes

You don't need to turn it off. Having it in sleep with the power plugged in should be fine. You do want to however, use the battery and drain it at least a bit to keep the juices flowing according to Apple.
