Youtube muted: cannot change

PC running Windows 7 Home Premium, all working normally hitherto, went to Youtube this morning and noticed the "speaker" had an X by it. Clicking it has no effect. All system volume controls are fine, speakers are working fine, no problems reported anywhere. I've updated Flash player (as I was intending anyway) to no avail.
Vids on other sites - sound is fine.
Anyone any ideas?

Is this specific to a particular browser?
You can sidestep flash all together by switching to the HTML5 version:

No, IE and Firefox both affected. (Haven't looked at any others.)
I have a couple of sites where I need to be able to continue with the old interface, alas. |

Maybe put a check on 'allow third party flash content to store data on your computer' in Global Storage Settings panel

QuickTime control panel.
Perhaps you can try this:
On the Audio tab, set "Default Music Synthesizer" to "General MIDI".
On the Advanced tab, disable "Enable playback of Adobe Flash tracks".
On the browser tab, click on "MIME Settings". Under "Miscellaneous", make sure "Flash media" is unchecked.
If still not working:Check if the file msacm32.drv is present in the C:\Windows\system32 folder. If not, copy it from another PC (that has the same version of Windows) and place the file in the system32 folder. If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, then the file should be present in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder.
maybe it's a wavemapper issue?

Got all the way to running the contents of the zip, took a couple of restarts but all now appears well.
I wish I could say I'm amazed at the fragility of Windows systems but ...
