I'm trying to install it and it keeps freezing at the same point. Is it a bad burn?

It sometimes does that when you don't have a lot of RAM. What do you have?

Minaki I think it comes down to what the user wants from their operating system. If I saw a line like that at first I would be frustrated, but shortly thereafter I would teach myself how to recomplile the kernal and anything else that it would take to make it work.
|
Unfortunately, some of us don't really have the time or the desire to learn how to recompile a Linux kernel. I've heard it's not exactly a walk in the park... and that's coming from people who actually know their way around this overly complex OS.
At the end of the day, it boils down to the fact that I, as an end user, shouldn't HAVE to learn how to recompile the kernel just to get one bit of software installed. It's crazy. I don't get this sort of messing around with Windows, so I'll stick to it.

There is no argument that makes windows a better operating system other than people admiting that they don't know enough about computers to be able to use Linux, and feel happier using microsoft "my first computer" user friendly interface... When i use windows now i feel as though bill gates is sitting there holding my hand.
|
The reason for using user friendly software isn't always cos you want bill gates to hold your hand, it's more often due to productivity. If I'm using a user friendly interface, I can get the job done 100 times quicker than I can on a non user friendly interface. It's all well and good if you've got the time to sit and work it all out, but I for one, don't.

Don't get me wrong I use Windows too and I'm still a newbie when it comes to Linux, but the truth is Linux isn't nearly as hard as you make it out to be. I've certainly been able to install software without having to recompile a kernal. In fact it wasn't any more difficult than installing something through Windows. You don't have to learn how to recompile the kernal to install software.
Sure it's a different operating system and it takes time to learn, but I don't think it's fair to call it overly complex. Not anymore
I think the reason you can be more productive in Windows is because you know the operating system. Ask Linux users and they'll say they're more productive with Linux. Linux isn't unfriendly anymore to users. It just offers more options beyond the basic interface. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but I think it's unfair to assume everything with it is complicated.

On kernel compiling: There aren't many times where you'd need to recompile the kernel. Distros once again come to the rescue, a lot of the times kernel upgrading can be done with the click of a mouse from a control panel. Besides, its dreadfully easy to recompile the kernel. It sounds dangerous and difficult, but it's really not. Once you do it the first time, you'll have no problem with it.
Windows is still ahead in the ease-of-use category (IMO), but not as much as it used to. Newbie users (who need email+browser+IM) won't have a problem. Power users won't have a problem. I think it's the users in between that have the problem learning an entirely new environment. But if you used Linux for 6 months, you'd be just as productive as you are in Windows.
I was running Slackware for about a year and after I got used to it, no problemo. I'm back on Windows now because I need my Photoshop Dual booting is too annoying so I hardly ever use my Linux install.

i have come to the conclusion that when it comes to reliability there is littlle difference.
|
Your kidding right? My Windows box is crazy, rebooting for installing applications? BSOD? WTF?!?! After about 5 days of uptime with my Windows box, it becomes highly unstable unless I reboot, Windows just doesn't know how to use memory properly.

It's true that there are many opensource alternatives for Linux for apps you can find on Windows, but not many of them actually compare IMHO.
|
I'm going to have to agree there. Anyone ever done any video editing in Linux? Its a PAIN!!! Sure there are a few different applications, but none of them even compare to Adobe's Premiere or Sony's Vegas. Anyone make music on their linux boxes? I can't find anything good for a replacement to Reason

I have a laptop that duel boots and i havn't had any problems with my XP instalation only 2 BSOD in 2 years as far as i can remember.
It is true that windows need rebooting more often than Linux, But most people reboot everyday, So i don't think it's that much of a problem.

I've never gotten a BSOD with Windows XP since I've started using it (and I enabled the option to show them)
Windows restarting is very annoying though. From software installs/uninstalls to Windows updates, a restart is always lurking around the corner Though I haven't restarted this computer in about 20 days.

I can't recall getting a single BSOD with my current laptop also with a dual boot setup. I'm generally in XP and I do shut down every night.
My big annoyance with the Windows updates are when I click the dialog box to say that I'll restart later I don't need it asking me again every 15 minutes. If someone knows how I can change that I'd be glad to hear.

I heard in vista there will be a feature where if the machine would normaly need a reboot it will give you the option to just restart the effected processes instead of doing a full reboot.
And yeah, Definately, That reboot nag bubble is probably the most annnoying thing ever. I think there is a registry edit that prevents XP informing you every few minutes that you need to reboot.
edit:
The SP2 local computer policy makes it easier.
Quote:
Start / Run / gpedit.msc / Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update / Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations
You can configure how often it will nag you (I re-configured it for 720 minutes, which means I'll be asked twice on a work day), or completely disable it.
|
Get rid of the Windows Update reboot nag

Everyone seams to think Linux is crap because when it is first installed it has not to many programs, codecs and eye candy etc... This is because Linux was built for everyone this means servers, desktops with high or low end specifications, Heck even my BT Home Hub is based on Linux.
Linux can out run any OS especially windows, The only reason there is a hype on Vista is because off Its design and Aero, You can top that with Beryl and a Vista theme.
If you love Vista for it effects go to YouTube.com and search Beryl you will be impressed.

I'm a 6+ years linux users.
Started with slackware, then Suse, red-hat, mandrake, and now Gentoo for the last 3 years.
In my case, I had to get back to windows 4 month ago, when my new employer enforced the usage of windows on their workstation, and let me say it, it's a real pain.
I'm 10 times more productive on a linux environments than on windows.
What with this small screen, all aps are all over themselves...
The focus, almost no keyboard shortcuts (that's what I'm missing the more).
On linux, I drive my whole interface by keyboard, and believe me, when you are a programmer, you "love" to not have your hand to go from keyboard to mouse, back to keyboard, to mouse and so on.
And for the curious peoples, my "desktop" was Enlightenment 0.17 ( http://www.get-e.org).
Not a sshot of mine, but looks close.

I like Ubuntu. it has really brought Linux to the mainstream user. I am really impressed with the integration of the compiz composite manager into the OS, especially from feisty on. Windows might be able to do a fraction of the things in Vista that Compiz covers, but for being the OS kernel known for putting people into CLI hell, i find it funny that the video capabilities of some of the distros now far surpass any M$ endeavor.

I did order Ubuntu last year. I think it is a great operating system, but it takes a lot of time to get used with it after you've been using Windows for a while.

I've been recommended Ubuntu quite a lot now. I think the time may have come to give it, or another Linux OS, a chance. I tried using Dyne:bolic a while back, but, as I couldn't get the sound working, it wasn't very successfull.
