I will be having a laptop for a while and it is cool sitting next to my CRT monitor. Looks kinda geeky. The first two days it was really exciting, having two computers and stuff, browsing different sites and starting different programs. But now I don't know what to do with it. It just sits there, doing nothing. It is a waste of computing power. I will apreciate if you give me some good ideas about putting it into practise. It is connected to my desktop via lan connection.

You could turn it into a LAN Server. Build websites on it, backup files ect.
If you don't know linux try installing it on that and learn a new OS.

Well, it is not exactly mine, but I'm allowed to do whatever I want with it. I thought about this SETI thing and it gave me an idea of somehow hooking the laptop to my desktop and making it do some of the computing. This is called grid computing and I searched a lot about it but it is not suitable for my case, so I'm back where I started. However I found one good application for it - as a download manager (Bit Comet takes to much resources anyway and removing it from my desktop was a great efficiency boost).

If, I were you, I'd sell it on eBay. But, it sounds like you don't completely own it.

You could also use Gomez Peer on it and the laptop and make a couple extra bucks. Also, if you moved it off your desk, they can work as a handy table to put your drink on... lol

i would say give it to kids next door so that they can play games on it .....

Why not try some things that you wouldn't do with your main computer (fear of messing it up etc.)

If you haven't used another operating system or would like some extra experience using another operating system why not install something like Linux (assuming you use XP) and give it a try? You might find you prefer a different OS without realising it

I use mine to test websites that I develop - - I have it loaded with Windows 98, a slow processor, downlevel browsers and plugged into a dial up connection.

The last thing I do before I turn a new website over to a customer is to test it on this dog to see how fast the site loads using an actual dialup connection and that it displays correctly on down level browsers.

i think u can not give the lan connection it is waste of use

Try if you can use for any one or more of the following:
1. Taking backup of important file and folders,
2. Using it for accounting like invoice preparation, sales, tax returns, etc.
3. Loading different Operating Systems, and test your applications, if any.
4. Share it with other members of family.

i would suggest these two..i'll make a test server for applications or any software that i want to try or learn...

If I read your post seven days back I would have given you a different advise. But last week my Desktop's Hard Disk crashed, it's only two months old, don't know the reason. I had to purchase a new one and had to go through all the grinds of re-installing the softwares. Use your second one as a backup.
