Everything I download is corrupt when I try to install it. I know the files are good, because they work on other computers. The programs are from reliable websites (OpenOffice.org, Nero, etc.) What is the problem?

After 6 weeks of hell with all kinds of random errors including the one you mention I ran extensive memory tests and found out that even good memory has errors when I use one of my three slots.

MS has a free memory tester. You can make a boot floppy or boot CD.

Unless you get errors and have to isolate the problem it is a pretty quick test.

It sounds as though I had an identical problem. I would download legit files and upon installation I would get an error message that the file was corrupt or unable to be verified as a 'good' download. The same files could be downloaded and installed on my other PC. It had me puzzled.

I figured it out. It was my doing. I downloaded the new IE7 and chose the wrong version for my operating system. I have XP Pro and should have picked Windows XP Service Pack 2".

I needed to uninstall (start-control panel-add/remove programs or windows components) the incorrect version and then download and install the correct version. I was initially fearful of deleting IE7, as it informed me that a hugh list of files rely upon it functioning. I went ahead and did it anyway. The problem appears to be solved and my favorites and history still existed from the previous install.

Hope this helps.

Have you tried for starters checking your pc for spyware using a program like www.ewido.com because spyware can cause these common problems

Okies i have solved this problem after jumping from forum to forum. If you have a ASUS A8N-Sli motherboard this will be very helpful.

1st uninstall Nvidia firewall you don't need it if you have windows defender or you can download AVG virus scanner free edition its great

2nd. if you always get the blue screen of doom or you get da screen once in a while, do a system restart go to bios and under boot device priority set 1st boot drive as cd rom and second boot device as HDD, you should also set the jumper configuration on your harddrive to master and slave and not to cable select.

3rd. download registry booster, if you are cheappie like me download it from mininova torrent its free and comes with the crack

4th. if you have ASUS A8N-sli motherboard you have 2 LAN's one of them is marvell and one of them is Nvidia, put your lan cable in marvell socket.

5th. run the registry program and clean your registry, it does it automatically for you. do a system restart and you are good to go. this worked really well for me

sometimes the corrupt downloads are caused due to spyware and **** therefore you can press ctrl alt+del key and check in the process, you should not be running any iexplorer.exe's, make sure when you are checking for this process all internet explorer's are closed this will DEFINATLY WORK

Reg, I think you meant well but that's some dangerous advice that shouldn't be attempted by a newcomer (and even quite a few so-called "experts").

1) Getting a crack from anywhere is a game of Russian roulette with your computer. It may be clean. It may be dirty and your virus scanner might pick it up in time. It may dirty and go undetected. You have no idea what you're getting into.

2) Running any registry program can quite often create more problems than it solves (e.g. Norton's old registry editing program). It may automatically remove "invalid" entries that have legitimate reasons for existence, may alter entries it's not supposed to, etc. Be careful.

MZA, I have a question for you: what happens when you download a program onto a non-affected computer and then transfer it over (burn it onto a CD, network transfer) onto your affected CD? Have you tried that yet? If you haven't and your programs still don't install, that would all but eliminate spyware as your source. Also, check Event Viewer to see if there are any strange errors at the time you install (they'll usually show up under Applications).

Okay, this one had me stumped. After scrounging the forums to find out why I couldn't download program updates, or any files without them being corrupted, I came up empty handed. I didn't have the motherboard some people were describing, but my problem was identical.

Here's what worked for me:
Call you ISP. They will run a test to see if you are losing packets of information (resulting in the corrupt download). In my case, the DSL modem had failed. I picked up another one, and everything is right again

I'm having the same problem with a Rig I just built. I have XP Home SP2. My mother board is a XFX 7100. I've tried reinstalling drivers, updating them, re installing Firefox, scanned for viruses and spyware. It doesn't help. all downloaded files are corrupt. I can transfer files via USB drives and they are fine. I can download files on all of the other computers in the house and they are fine. Could there be a problem with the Marvell port?

I have been having a similar problem. Not an ASUS board.

Everything I try to install is corrupted. Formated and installed windows xp twice from 2 different cd's. It works fine for a little bit and then everything I try to install says it is corrupted.

MS Office from CD
Acrobat from Flash Drive
AVG downloaded from internet repeatedly.

Everything. No viruses cause of clean install.

Trying memtest86 now.

Found some errors.

Hope it is the ram.....ram cheap now....lol.

i think you have a hardware problem example (RAM Processing/Hardisk) and your connection is not good in receiving the data from Internet. do check your software, example Download Manager, because it will corrupt the file while streaming and joining the data.
