Im looking around for a new laptop and The core duo seems to be the latest processor. does it have 2 processors or something? and if it does would each one be half of what the overall speed is?

core duo is 2 processors in 1... the performance is way fast...
well after intel releasing core duo they are now introducing quad processors... think how fast is it...

Simply put, it's what chronicles said. It's a processor that thinks it's two. If you remember what Hyperthreading is, the concept behind a dual core processor is similar.
I have a dual core processor in my tower (no laptop here...ewwwwww) and it totally rocks the party that rocks the body. I highly recommend it for the serious geek.

I just bought a Pentium D, dual core PC running on Windows XP pro. The performance was not as high as I was expecting. Windows XP supports multi core processing but many other programs don't. If a program does not support multi core processing it will just run on one processor.

I also want to know the combined speed of this 2in1 combo processor.
All I can tell you is that Intel couldn't make it's processors run any faster under the power, heat output and size restrictions that were in place so Intel decided to run 2 parallel processors.

Ok lets get this straight!
There are two Cores, both are on one die, and share the same cache. Thus it improves speed when doing more than one thing at once, but is poor at FPC

Did you get the 64-bit edition of XP? There are significant performance improvements if you do.
The downside is that not all software is supported by it and certain things in Windows (e.g. IIS) have to run in 32-bit mode.
As far as the question about the two cores on one die, that is correct. I'm not sure about the FPC issue.

FPC stands for floating-point calculation. it's really hard to explain, but it is basically on about the insides of the CPU, and how fast data is transported around there, as well as how fast it can code a very very very big number, and a very very very small number into a binary number.
complicated stuff, and if i explained, most people won't get it..

I knew what you meant. I just don't know the answer to that question.

I have an ordinary 32bit Windows. It's the copy tha came preinstalled with the HP Dual core PC. I hope HP know what they're doing by installing 32 and not 64 bits

There's your problem right there. You bought a brand name PC (specifically a Prickard). If it ain't a printer, HP won't build it to last...or work...or function...or be useful in any way other than a paperweight.
Let this be a lesson to you. Shop around. Go to your local computer stores. Ask questions. Get informed. Do your homework. And then repeat all of these steps at least three times.

In reply to youtr post ADAM Web Design,
I don't buy any hardware or software before I scan the market for products and prices, asking people and users on my way, then I scan the net for user's opinions and technical reviews.
After doing all of that, I found this HP Compaq DC-7600 convertable runnming at 3.4GHz and 1GB Ram. Bearing in mind that here in Egypt, the choice of PCs is not as wide as in other places.

Does the 64 bit version of Windows XP have compatability issues with software?

Core Processors are really fast. But only hardware support is not enough, you need a good OS to get the best of your hardware. The problem is as new hardware support are coming we see new products are also hitting the market. So sometimes what we expect does not really materialize.
