How do u make a webserver and where do i get everything i need to make a server which can display webpages on another computer

If your a windows user, it might be easier to use IIS, just because it looks like windows..

But wait.. it isn't so simple, you also need to have a very good firewall, and also a DMZ. + you will need to get some extra ports open on your internet connection to actually let the data pacets be sent to the computers trying to connect.

Well I use IIS just because I'm runing windows server and also have the same box setup as an exchange server but IIS is one if you have windows xp Pro or some version of windows server it comes preloaded on them.
I would recommend apache though you can download it free at http://www.apache.org/ it is open source and is the best webserver available right now it's fully customizable and isn't too difficult to setup.

okay right i know i have to some how set up my hub to like allow it for a server (not a clue how but i know it has to be done) but what do u mean a DMZ? and also why would i need a very good firewall or is that just becasue it would be open to public. (depending how you look at it isnt all computers connected to the net open to public, if u know how...)

now you need a firewall or you WILL get hacked, you also need a DMZ, as people will hack you, and if they do get in, they could easily take over your computers in your network, and send virus's from them, and you will get arrested for it!

would i still need the extra protecten even though i only plan to use the server when ever im on and i will not be leaving in on all the time only maybe 2 hours a day max?

(i am really making this server as a learning tool)

also i have installed ubuntu server and it is currently in a Dos like mode and i am wondering if ubuntu server 6.10 (i think) has a desktop like viewing mode if that makes sense or is it completely dos like black background white text?...

Use PHPDEV5, don't worry about any ports or any crap like that. If it's only a personal server, then simply edit the httpd.conf in the Apache folder of it to only allow from localhost.

PHPDEV5 is Apache / Apache 2, PHP4, MySQL4, GTK-Dev, etc rolled into one. I find it perfect for the learning development.

ok... but does ubuntu server have like a nice desktopy mode or is it all dos like?
please i have only ever used windows xp and only had to use dos to recover my computer (and do other things on school computers....) so i really am thinking about forgetting it and just re-installing windows on the computer so could someone please help me understand it more
