I downloaded and installed it and here are my opinions:
* The tabs are a good idea but not as good as Opera.
* Still slow ( compared to Opera and FF)
I use Opera for all my web browsing and have IE6 installed becuae some websites only work well with IE.
What do you think

I haven't installed it on this machine (I will once I get a backup that I can use for IE6-type purposes), but I have seen it on others and to be totally honest, I don't like it.
I find it ugly, slightly awkward to use, and I don't like the whole ClearType thing being enabled by default (the irony is that ClearType is less clear than regular text.)
I have other reasons for not liking it, but these are just a few.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get IE7 to work on my laptop. I think it's more some tweaks I had made to my system than problems with IE7, but after trying several things I'm at a loss as to what to try next. IE7 just crashes for me the moment I launch it.
From what I have seen though I do think it's an improvement over IE6. The extra security alone is probably enough to make the upgrade and while the interface is a little different and might take a little time to get used to it looks like it's a better overall browser to me.
Of course I haven't really gotten to use it much given my problems with getting it to work.

i have most browsers, and ie7 okay i admit when i first got it i have to admit it is good once you get used to it. after a couple of days you get used to the new layout etc, However, my school which has just had a new site made, http://www.greendown.swindon.sch.uk when i have view it from every other browser and IE6 it looks as it is suposed to. But when i view it with IE7 the text becomes so small its unreadable, and the layout goes to pot.
of course the site needs to make some sort of change to stop this and i have emailed the IT admin about the issue (yet to recieve a reply...) basically i would just say not to use it as you only browser atleast
lol just so u dont end up stuck not being able to view a site...

I don't much care for IE 7 either. Like Adam said, the interface is awful, they've moved things around and even the default toolbars you're used to aren't enabled by default.. which makes no sense to me. I don't like it's attempt at a tabbed interface, Opera and FF are 100x better.. but IE was a late-comer to that party. I still find it significantly slower than FF or Opera too.
I only use IE to test my sites anyway, FF is my main browser.

About the tabbed interface, I'm surprized that the mighty Microsoft would simply rip this idea from FF and Opera. I thought Microsoft should have invented it's own breakthrough idea/method.
As usual, Microsoft has realeased a new version of it's software that is not ready for use, like Windows XP that had many incompatabilities and had to be patched up with an also unready SP1, pathches for the big SP1 patch were released then a SP2.
Imagin having a pair of jeans that got torn so you patched the torn area, the patch itself got torn are you going to patch the patch? Microsoft did.
I don't like the way Microsoft is monoplizing the PC world. At this pace, Microsft will kill off it's copetitors who challange Microsoft and as in this case, give Microsoft somewhere to steal ideas from, which lead to improvement.

I tried it on my desktop (which I rarely use) and hated the interface. I will probably upgrade eventually since I rarely use IE anymore anyway (only for internet banking). Are they still supporting IE6 with security patches? If so, any idea how long for?

I've been using Firefox for ages (back when it was Firebird, back at v0.7), and I was a longtime proponent of using Firefox over IE6.
However, IE7 came out, and I was at first turned off by the change of interface, but it has progressively grown on me. I find it *much* faster than Firefox (I'm running whatever the latest Firefox is). And no, I'm not running a slow machine (Core 2 Duo w/ 2GB DDR2 RAM). I guess it all comes down to personal opinions, but I really like IE7.

Chad do you have a lot of extensions installed on Firefox? I'd think a clean version of Firefox would run faster than IE7, though I can't say I've run any tests.
Firefox loads slowly for me at the moment, but I probably have more extensions installed than most people. I don't hold that against Firefox at all. Launching it in safe mode without the extensions is very fast.

I use IE 6, and 7 (on different machines). In my opinion IE 6 is better, but IE all together is just bad. FF is a lot better because it's faster, and it doesn't have a bunch of stuff included that you never use so you have a lot more viewing space, and I do notice IE crashes quite a bit more than FF.

IE7 does seem like a bit of a joke, but I've noticed that even FF slows down after awhile, especially if I've opened a lot of tabs. But then, my laptop is a hand-me-down from my dad and I haven't been able to upgrade the memory.
But then again, FF is still my browser of choice. I tried Opera, but after running a few times, it wouldn't even open, so I don't use it anymore.

I agree with LadyNRed, the interface is atrocious and they should never had moved things around like that - it's also ugly in design - you would think it being microsoft and all that they would have some good graphic designers in their employ...
