So the new windows is it worth upgrading ?

I've talked to quite a few people who beta tested Vista, read the articles, heard all the hype and I'm not too impressed. Also, although I'm not anti-microsoft, I never upgrade my windows until at least 6 months after a new release. I let everyone else find the bugs, MS release a patch, then I'll think about upgrading

i dont see the point in microsoft. y not make their OS's opensource, the good press they would get wpuld do them a world of good. and it would mean we could get the best of both worlds... or relse the source and allow any programmer to go through it and they can then submit their better version of it to microsoft, who could then release a OS which has been improved my the people who will get the most out of it.

know what i mean?...

Microsoft don't care about good press, They care about good money. Open sourcing windows would kill MS. Nobody would pay $200 for windows if they could get it for free. Not to mention the security risk of releasing the source for something to widely used.

you say security risk? but why is it the limux source code is redily avalible and yet it is suposed to be one of if not THE most secure OS?

There are three factors which aid the security of Linux.

The first is people login to it with restricted user accounts. the first thing people are told when they install thier first linux is never login as root unless you need to to do something. So even if a virus got onto a system it would have limited access to things like system files and would only really be able to alter files in /home/user.

Secondly the limited number of linux boxes online means it's not worth virus writers time creating viruses for the small number of potential targets.

Thirdly because there are a lot of peple working on linux patches are available very quickly after a vulenerability is found.

generally though, If you can see the source code finding holes in that code becomes a lot easier.

If anyone listens to the CNet Buzz Out Loud or Real Deal podcasts, Tom Merritt has been doing a number of stories on Vista, the challenges of upgrading and his frank opinion of whether it is worth it. The short answer is that if you have the right hardware to run all of the features (Aero glass, BitLocker) and you really want it, go ahead. But short of the capability to full use all the new features, Vista is little more than an upgrade to XP.

I'm one of those suckers who has purchased the Ultimate Edition. It is currently back ordered but when I get it and can give some more feedback I will try to remember too.

I haven't upgraded to Vista yet, as my laptop is broken and I'm using an older desktop in the meantime. But Vista has an awful lot going for it. All of the fancy UI stuff is done by the video card now - in XP the CPU does all the calculation and then sends a rendered image to the video system - so that should free up a lot of cycles. In theory.

As with all new MSFT products, I'd give it a few months though.

I was talking to some of my friends who work in IT. And they were saying how vista will be great and a good advance for microsoft. And one was saying (he works for IT at the school he used to go to) That he will get all the computers upgraded to vista.

My advice to everyone is buy a Apple Computer. Vista looks and acts so much like a MAC that its funny. Only thing is Mac Os will use less ram & cpu. You can also run Windows XP along side your Mac OS thanks to bootcamp which is included.

I wouldn't get it right now..I'm waiting till the summer.

From everything I have ready, don't upgrade to it. Buy new and get it. You will get a much better user experiance with new hardware that is designed to work with Vista.

I am not a vista user, it actually made me go out and get linux on my laptop and desktop. I am tired of paying for something that is supposed to be so great and change everything and turn out to be much like what it was before.

Linux actually does make good leaps and if you want something to be changes, usually you can go out and make those changes, without dropping more money to get the right software.

Now I will always have a dual boot box for gaming, hard to get the latest and greatest on mac or linux.

I heard a lot of people been getting bugs.

gaming is my priority, otherwise id have a mac (macs are too hard to upgrade, so I wont dual) I wont get vista until games go 64 bit.

it is only usefull if you have an heavy pc with lot's of ram

Well, I said I would come back after installing (it has been a while of running it). There have been a few minor annoyances, such as some third party software not running correctly. Other than that though, I am fairly pleased with my purchase. I hate to admit it but all the eye candy really does make a difference, not in actual computing tasks (come on, we aren't really like the PC in the Mac commercials anyways) but in just the computing experience. I enjoy looking at the glassed over windows, the transitions are nice and by far DreamScape is the coolest thing to ever happen to my desktop.

The security upgrades are not as annoying as Apple would have you believe, I actually like knowing that there is a separate layer (as in separate from my user account) that is always monitoring whether an application wants to run. This will make it much harder for virus writers to gain unfettered access to my PC.

It needs a few service packs.
