Hello,

My computer defrags to about 15% then give me this message:

Defragmentation is complete for: IBM_PRELOAD (C

Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files.

I really think it should defrag better than that.

I have Window XP - Any advice.

Thank you
Kimberly

Do you have any programs running in the background when you run the defrag ?? If so, kill as many of them as you can, then try it again.

Turn off or unplug your modem. Disable your screen saver. Reboot in safe mode and run scandisk and then defrag. Both should work fine.

Then you can reboot in normal mode with everything enabled.

I can turn off the screensaver ( I think)

By model do you mean the external box from comcast gave me or something in the laptop?

How do you restart in safe mode?

Sorry, I am just a mom who runs a web page so she can stay home.

Thank you
Kimberly

This is for Windows XP.

I suggest you print this to read as you do it.

Depending on the size and condition of your hard this could take a few hours to complete so allow plenty of time.

Unplug the modem comcast gave you. This is just extra security.
Click on start.
Click on run.
Type msconfig into the box and click OK
Click on the second radio button. Diagnostic startup.
Click apply OK
Reboot the system and ignore the message box.
Shut down your virus protection if it loads. (this is why unplug the modem)
Shut down any other programs that are in the tray at the bottom.
Run Scandisk with auto fix selected.
Run defrag.
After it completes.
Click on start.
Click on run.
Type msconfig into the box and click OK (should already be there for you)
Click on the first radio button. Normal startup
Click apply OK
Reboot, everything should be normal
Plug in the modem. A reboot my be required for you computer to find it.

Screensaver
Right click on the desktop
Select the screensaver tab and set to none.

Let us know how this turns out.

THANK YOU

Since you seem to get this stuff and I can't get a straight answer out of my tech support. Can you tell me what I would google, what terms or keywords to get a list of what "must" be checked on the start up menu. I have no problem doing my own research but have no idea how to find the list. I have tired but never seem to find the right information.

Thank you very much for any help
Kimberly

That is going to vary widely from computer to computer based on the programs you have installed. Sometimes things that are uninstalled do not get removed and that creates problems.

What you can do is open it via msconfig and see what file is being called. Then you just type the filename into the Google search box. You almost always get one or more hits that will tell you what program is associated with the filename.

Some of the new release crapware that is loaded when you visit a site is not listed. Most of that stuff can be disabled in IE under the browser addons section. For the most part disable everything that is not certified as having come from Microsoft or one of the major name software companies you have installed on your computer.
