hi,
my motherboard has boh sata and IDE, i currently have a 40GB and a 80GB ide hard drives.

i have almost completely run out of space, i would like to (once i got enough cash) buy a nice big one but wonderd if i can still keep my other two hdds

is it possible to use both SATA and IDE hard drives at the same time?

one person has told me know but i can not see any particular reason why not.

could someone please either confirm or deny this, before i spend quite a bit of money on a hard drive.

Thanks.
Dan

It depends on the MB I think.

With my new system (asus mb) I can use both but the OS needs to be on the sata drive. I should add the board has 4 sata connectors and only 1 dual ide.

The good news is sata drives are cheap. I got a 250gb sata2 for like $73 including shipping from zipzoomfly.

Yes. My DVD-RW drive is an IDE drive, but my two hard drives are SATA.

That one you'd have to try, I think. I don't know if anyone would know the answer.

The question I have, though, is: are you sure that's what you wish to do? Your IDE drive will likely be slower than your SATA drive, and in certain instances will create a speed bottleneck.

it is better to have OS on smaller drives and then use big drives for sorage, which is why i want this...

I have now brought s 250GB SATA drive,
The computer does not appear to be reconising it at all.
any ideas?

Thanks
Dan

You may want to read your manual.

The asus board that I have states that if you have both ide and sata the operating system must be on the sata at ide0. Now that may be just this board or even this version of this board.

Unlike ide each sata has its own cable connection. Maybe you aren't plugged into the number one slot. Take out all of them except the sata and see if the bios finds it.

I had two drives in this one for a short while and the ide and sata were fine with each other. Like Adam I currently have the dvd on the primary ide controller and only one drive.

okay,
now i would look at the manuals etc which i got with my sata drive and my mb.. BUT.
my mb was a display ones which is why i got it so cheap and of course becasue of the very oganised people at maplins i didnt get the drivers disc, or a manual. so i have had to (try and get very annouyed with foxconn's crappy site) to download the drivers and get all ports etc working

and the sata drive was a "brown box" so no screws no manual just the drive.

i REALLY dont want to put my OS(s) on the sata drive, but it seems i might have to my mother board doesnt appear to reconise the drave at all, and it is connected to the first sata socket

i think i may talk to the geek in pc world and hope theres a way round it. or might have to just try returning and maybe getting a IDE

THEY LIE!! from what i have read sata is suposed to be SOOO much easier than PATA/IDE to install and use....
MY A**! IDE U JUST PLUG AND PLAY
at the most u have to formatt and asign a letter
i brought a PATA drive with it and i installed that within 5 minutes on my mums pc. and had it working

AARGH

HAS ANYONE used a sata drive for just storgae with Os on IDE?

thanks
Dan

Dry your tears and quit stomping your feet.

Now go, download and burn the utlimate boot disk.

Boot using it, use the tools and get the full name of your motherboard.

Now download or read online the pdf version of the manual.

Everything I have plugged into my computer has been plug and play.

Maybe you bought a sata2 drive and only have sata1 ports. Without knowing what your board supports no one can help you and that is all I am trying to do.

i can use both sata and ide at the same time. you can install the O/S in either sata or ide disk (you have to select the master driver in bios)

Dan here is a link to the main site. That model number must be off just a little bit because I got zero hit when searching.

At least they have a site even if it is hard to find.
