I have an AVI movie. I burned it to an DVD+R disc and stuck it into my standard DVD player. My DVD player does not recognize the disc. What file format does it take so that I can put it on a DVD and play on a regular DVD player (as opposed to a laptop)?

you'll need to convert it to standard dvd .vob files, there are many applications that will do this I recomend VSO's convertxtodvd

The newer DVD players come with DivX/Avi support. So a regular data DVD can be played easily.

That and AVI means "Audio and Video Interleaved", it's just an container.
AVI files exists in hundred's of formats, and if your DVD player don't understand their codec, it won't be able to play them.
But it's true that most of the dvd player today are able to play divx files.
