There's software out there available to do that sort of thing. It is costly though. That and it's also Windows based. Basically, you have a bunch of network based printers installed on this server. This software sits between the network and the printing stack on the PC/Server..kind of. The printers are then shared across the network and all the client computers print to the remote printers *via* the server. Now here's the clever bit. When a job is sent to the printer from the client, the auditing software can see the username used to print the document, goes off to it's database, and determines if the user has enough credits to print the document. If so, it released it. If not, it spits a message back up on the client to say so. Oh by the way, this also involves installing software on the client.
It's clever, and really advanced stuff. Which can also be configured/updated remotely. But it's pricely, and really is overkill for most people, unless you run a school campus or something.
