Haha where did you come to that conclusion?
Unique content is by far the best way to gain serps and more traffic with quality backlinks. Without unique content sites would all be left to rot in supplemental hell.
Content is king and by having unique content you will increase your traffic, backlinks, and PR,,, if you worry over it/

You also need to look past today, which is over. Look towards tomorrow. With each passing day, having unique content becomes more important. While you may be able to do ok today (bot wise) with duplicated content, the day will come when you will suffer more.
I say use what you want. If you make the wrong choice, that's your business.

Unique content is definitely NOT overrated. While it may seem like a long road to haul, over time having unique content will pay off. As an example, you can publish it in various ezines, etc that get you great exposure and also generate a good amount of quality backlinks (via your author resource box).
The beauty of unique content is that YOU own it, the possibilites are endless.

Nothing beats unique content, especially when other people are producing it for you (ex. earnersforum.com )

I agree a bit with the OP. I'd say the phrase "unique content" is over used a lot - people ask questions about how to get traffic and the instant response is usually unique content this, unique content that and so on...its become a bit of a buzz word really.
I dont think unique is the issue anyway - its the quality thats important in my mind. How many websites on the net have totally unique content? Ok so the actual written material might be unique but the subject matter and news stories and stuff will be very unlikely to be totally unique.
You can have totally unique content but it can be really short and utter crap, or you can write quality material about the same stuff loads of other people have written about, but make it interesting and decent. Which gets more traffic and links etc? Pretty obvious I think.
Anyway - Digg and Slashdot seem to be doing pretty well for themselves with zero unique content.

I believe what you perceive from this is that unique content eventually becomes everyones content right?

Well in a way.
Consider this - say for example you write some genuinely unique content about the pros and cons of taking a holiday on the moon or something. You might be totally 100% unique to begin with, but someone else is going to write about it too eventually. You're writing may be unique (i.e. the actual words and paragraphs etc), but the subject matter has very little chance of being unique.
I'd change from instincivly barking "unique content" whenever anyone asks to "write your own content about well-used keywords", and obviously point out that there is little point in just using article sites to get (duplicate) content.

Yeah but that isn't why people visit! The endlessly repeated mantra is add "unique content" and people will come and look at it. People dont go to digg to read the comments, they do to digg to read the news stories.

Quality is always a must. I can write "blah blah 846321 blah-e4.i blahadsy 823r487adsffs"
It's unique, but it's crap too.

To me, unique content means written by an individual for their use. It appears in only one place at any time. If I am on a website, and I see the same things I've seen everywhere else on the web, I hightail it off that page quickly.
Unique content is not overrated.
