I’m a journalist by trade, but one of the things that I’ve found is most important about writing for the Web is being able to write within a box – that is, writing within the constraints of maximizing monetary keywords, 2-word headlines and SEO.
Studies have shown that Web surfers typically read the first two words of a headline, and that’s it. Maximize your headlines with a noun and a verb, if possible – "Adsense Crashes."
The other alternative to a noun-verb headline is a list post – "10 Money Saving Tips."
Using the right keywords is crucial to the relevant contextual ads shown on your site. I’m a big fan of Pixelfast's Overture Keyword/Bid Amount Tool to determine the most profitable way to write a story.
Writing for SEO is equally as important, obviously in order to build traffic and help visitors find your site. Using the Pixelfast tool suggests most searched for phrases related to your topic.
In writing for the Web, an author can’t just let the words come out: they have to be properly massaged and targeted to achieve maximum results.
Content is king – and better content rules crappy content any day of the week.
