When you say content, are you talking about information that people are searching for on the net or is it content about specific subjects of interest other than marketing.

What types of content are the most sticky?

When you talk about "content" for your website, does have to be related to the products you're selling or can it be just information about anything of interest? Also... what types of content are people searching for the most? I'm wondering if there are certain subjects that are searched more often than others.

redryder, you listed a couple of types of information people search for.
The thing is, everything is searched for. But most often, I guess, people search for general terms in the industry (what they need), like 'table lamp' or 'adidas shoes'.
But targeting general terms is not a bright move unless you have a lot of incoming links. At the start, you might want to have content that is related to your product and more specific terms, such as 'table lamp <brandname>' and 'adidas men shoes response'). That's real content (if it delivers what it promises, that is).

Check out http://www.43things.com/ for example. There you can find lots of things that people want. Refresh the page and you'll probably see that people want "get a nice stomach", "learn spanish", "wake up when my alarm clock goes off", "quit smoking" and so on. If you have something useful - and a different point-of-view on these things, and can help people to get what they want - I'm sure you will get (and find a way to get) what you want (money, happiness, website traffic - whatever it is you are after).
One example people are interested in: "how much somebody makes money with [insert your subject here]". I started putting indie game sales stats and show how some games make over $60,000 revenue - people immediately get interested and the word spreads. These are one of the most popular articles on my website.
You can do the same. If you have a website about loony monkeys, try to find out how much somebody makes money with loony monkeys. If you have a site about selling text links, start telling people how much your (or others) are earning by selling text links. Basically the formula "any subject + how much money it gets = interest" works in many occasions. Even sites that are not interested in making money (yeh, just show me one ) can use this: Church sites could tell how much money they got from donations each month.
Hope this helps.

Okay, you've piqued my interest here. What exactly do you do on 43 things? How do you "tell people" what you've got to say?

Well, you can live without unique content. But if you want to be remarkable and genrate natural word of mouth and links, writing quality content is the way to go.

Traffic is EMPEROR but Content is KING.
Here's a tip: The most sustainable kind of TRAFFIC is the loyalty generated by the quality of your content. SE algorithms change, bot effectiveness fluctuates, social networking sites change, all traffic sources change......the only thing that won't change is the LOYALTY of your site visitors. Take good care of them. Give them what they need: REAL QUALITY CONTENT.

You may like to build a hybrid affiliate page to capture traffic.
Traffic that comes to your site and goes is as good as no traffic.
A hybrid affiliate page typically contain an opt in box and quality information as the main page.

Yes content is the KING but not all content. Only relevant and quality content, that's what people look for. Most of them do not read the entire content word to word. They scan through the webpage picking up individual words and sentences.
It's always good to highlight the keywords, to have good sub-headings and one idea per paragraph are few points that will really create an impact on the visitors.

Yes exactly. In general, people scanning for facts etc do just that - they scan. Having paragraph after paragraph of content can be a turn off (but this totally depends on the context and subject/purpose)
Bullet points, lists, bold text, split pages etc etc make content easier to read and can often make people stick around longer to read it.

Good content will help but you need to rank though. Ranking is more important.

I agree, but you still need to get content from somewhere.

If you are passionate about a niche, youll know it research it and come out with stuff other enthusiasts would flock to - if they could find it in time!
Usually i think the ideal combination for success is a hard hat marketer with an innocent genius lol - the 'Col Tom Parker/Elvis approach'...

I think monetizing it isn't so much the question as it is actually getting traffic to all of those niche sites.
I have the resources to create lots of unique content on pretty much any topic, but it's just getting traffic to those that seems to evade me.
So I'm curious how people get traffic to their niche sites or if they don't really try past doing some simple SEO and link building.

I think, the first thing to do is focus a niche or maybe 2 or 3, you can't work in a lot of niches at the same time, because you could lose concentration and quality, a day is only 24 hours, you can't work 25 hours per day. Maybe you have all the material ready and you only need to launch it, but it's difficult to work with different topics, it's hard to maintain the concentration of attention to any single detail.
I think to get ranked in search engine is difficult and it takes time, you should find an alternative way, for example:
- Submitting articles.
- Exchanging ads.
- Press releases.
- Discussion groups (forums).
- Networks (my space, msn, ryze ...).
- Write an e-book and give it away.
- Build a blog.
- Create a joint venture with someone selling something and offer part of your material as a bonus.
- Many more.
Of course everything related to your niche.
People have to know you and what you are offering. Let to know them that you are there and you have a very good stuff for them. First you have to give and then you'll receive. Don't keep the whole information hidden, give part of it away and if it's good, you'll see good results.
I just finished to post in a forum about content vs. context. Context is King, but it doesn't matter now.
