especially the ones who write the first articles for an "introductory" price without telling you and then the want to charge 3 times that amount for any follow up work....

I signed up for another site where you pay a small monthly fee for membership, then have access to inexpensive original articles. I knew this was a gamble, because I paid just $9 for a 750-word article on a home business topic. The person who wrote the article was very nice, and seemed sincere in wanting to do a good job. When I got the article, I decided once and for all that these cheap article sources are not for me. This article was obviously written by someone who did not know English very well. It contained obvious errors (like using the word "sew" where it should have been "sow"). I was not even able to re-write this one.

All of this has made me feel like a pretty decent writer, when I compare what I have done to what I have received back from these different article writing services I've tried.

Seriously though, I am wondering what you have to pay in order to get a professional quality article on a home business topic that is good enough to submit without reservation or extensive editing.

Even the highest paying clients I've worked with (ranging from $200 to well over $1000 per article now), still edit work from professionals to make sure it fits in the appropriate spacing they've allocated, the feel they're going for, etc. There's no way you'll completely avoid editing, especially if you don't hire professionals. That will usually solve your "extensive" editing problem though. Other options would be to lay out exactly what you want up front (in which case you may as well write it yourself and just hire an editor), or lower your standards to be in line with whatever your individual budget it. I'm not sure what exactly you're paying, but the two things always go hand in hand to some degree.

At times, I have contracted with a writer (subject matter expert, poor writer) and with an editor (good writer, no subject matter knowledge) to work on the same article -- I pay twice, but I get a decent end product.
