If you want the run the kind of business where clients pay you for what you produce, the worst way to get this off the ground is to establish a reputation for giving your work away for free.
You mentioned that there's a lot of competition, but it's segmented. 99 % of your competition is made up of what writers call "hacks," who produce lousy quality, with plenty of made up words, no grammar, etc. Free, and worth every penny, but they get a precious link out of it. The best thing you can do is find customers who are willing to pay for quality, and deliver it to them.
