Hi guys.. I have recently shifted my focus from web design and development to freelance writing. I do plan to stay active in web design, however.

Anyway, I figured since this forum has been a great source of information for me as a designer, I might use it as well for inspiration for new articles.

Im trying to find topics that are not covered well or that need a different angle on. Im looking for new and old designers to chime in on subjects they would like to hear more about... I could cover the basic of HTML or php, but that would be reinventing the wheel, which is not a good strategy for a new writer!

Anyway, let me know if you have any topics that you feel need to be covered. Any of you copywriters who have suggestions, they would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Sam

PS I do plan to rummage through the forums for ideas and perhaps previous posts such as this. So please only post actually ideas, rather than saying to "Look through the forums"... unless of course you have a specific post in mind.

I'm not helping but, I think it's a great idea.

It may take a little time to build up traffic. But, one of the best things about writing on the web is, once you get your traffic flowing, it'll still come if you take a vacation or whatever.

There is a huge opportunity to make more writing for yourself than for a traditional publisher nowadays.

good luck

Thanks for the encouragement Paul

I do plan to query a few print magazines about some articles ideas I have, but for the most part I plan to write on the web. It should be an exciting, well at least interesting, experience.

You can check out Helium.com and EzineArticles.com for ideas on what topics are hot, and which ones need articles. Helium's forum also has a lot of help for new freelance writers.

You might also check elance.com It's a clearinghouse type site where writers bid for available work.

I've been writing all my life. I started out writing sports articles for a local newspaper and have since been published in Newspapers, Magazines, specialty publications and in technical publications. I have also self-published 7 books on my various family lines and I am currently the web master for several web sites and the editor for others.

NEVER restrict the venue you will write for or the topic. Yes, a lot of topics have been covered but none of them well. People want simple but detailed instructions on various topics. I would love to see a step by step, line by line article on how to set up a My-SQL database to work with PHP code. Larry Ullman's book comes close but even he assumes the user knows too much.

The trick is to keep writing. NEVER let the goomers get you down. With your own domain name and some time, hemingway and Steinbeck will have NOTHING on you.

When and if you go visit my Genealogyland page, make sure you scroll down on the index page and you'll see my latest project. it may take a while but I will get it done.

Hey Sam,

Here's an idea... Go to the sites you want to write for and look through the article titles they already have... what's missing? Fill that gap.

And be sure to read their Submission Guidelines and follow them to a 'T.'

Also, contact those sites' publishers and ask them if they have any needs.

I guess some new topics could be about optimizing content for social media purposes in addition to mainstream sites?? fairly topical at the mo?

Those are getting hard to find. So many websites about so many subjects...
There might be some openings on very technical subjects though.

Definitely don't restrict yourself to one genre. Its best to have a broad understanding of everything, but also know specifics on some of your favorite topics. This way you don't find yourself only writing for certain topics only.

If your looking for ideas to write, you could simply try surfing the net and just see for yourself some articles that you feel is missing something or just isn't right. I'm sure you'll get plenty of ideas just by reading some articles already published. By the way, I think that's a really great idea, that you are trying to venture on writing.
