i work as a self emp web designer and photographer and do everything under my trading name as a photography company.

ive just finished a site for a client and as usual put the "designed by" and my business name at the bottom.

now ive been asked if i can remove my business name because "her brother has a photography business too and its not fair on him to have someone elses on there" - even though she has recently removed a link to his site anyway!

her brother is someone local too who i know is quite petty over such matters (for example he wont even exchange links with another wedding supplier for his own site if theres any other photographers mentioned on it). basically he doesnt like competition and wants to be the "only" one around here! i think it is more him that is firing the bullets rather than her in this case.

what would anyone else on here do in such a situation?

Take the links down, We never put self promo links in footers without the express permission of the client anyway

Yes, if they have paid you then it is their site and you should do whatever they want. Chris is right.

This should have been discussed earlier with him, but if he wants it down it goes down. You cannot win

If I pay a company for work I expect the work to become my full property. If I choose not to have a link back to the designer/programmer then I feel that is entirely within my right.

So to answer your question, I would just remove the link.

I must agree with everyone else. If you had done the work for free, that's a different story but if someone has paid you for your services, they do not have to keep your name or company information attached to it at all. I've used several designers for different websites and none of them expected to get advertised credit for their work, unless I got a compliment on the design and I would immediately refer that person to my designer

Sure have to remove it. They pay you for the design. Not that you do it for free. Well... they are the one paying.. so you have to listen

I think its better to leave it.. Anyway, advertising on someone's site might not help you so much. If someone is really impressed of whatever you've done in her site, they will take your contact info themselves and contact you. dont worrry. just remove it.
