I have been toying with this idea for a while now and thought it was time to get some firgures.
Now when I refer to content writers I mean people whose native language is English and not Engrish, people that have been schooled in English speaking countries and not skooled 2 reed and rite in a non native English speaking country, the thing being in Thailand there are thousands of native English speakers eaking out a meager existence as TEFLers who basically are desperate for more money, so wondered if the idea was feasible or worth it.

Writers rate depends on the services that you will be needed. If you will be needing full time, part time or project based services. You should also include your requirements such as the number of articles and words per article you need. Not all native English writers can write perfect articles.

Jedz is right, even though they speak excellent English that doesn't necessary means they are good writers. However, blog comments and forum postings are easier to do, think about this also.

I paid someone $3 per article in the past but I never actually used any of them since the english was subpar.

I have paid anywhere from $8 per article to $1.75 per article. The amount you pay depends on the quality of article that you want.
If you are looking for articles to get traffic to your site, then I recommend paying a little more, around the $4 to $5 range in order to get people to your site.
Now if you are using writers to just create unique content for you to build back links, then I believe there is no point in spending any more than $3 per article. I pay my writer about $1.75 per 400-500 word article that I use for just creating content to get back links.
I get my writers from getafreelancer which has some really good writers. And of course if you are a member of Wealthy Affiliate, they have some great workers there also in their jobs section.

Dam n, when I said they were desperate for money I don't think they have reached those depths yet, I can see why the internet is lacking in quality content

I've seen article writers go to as litte as $1.5 per 400 word article and it was unique content. But, to be honest I wouldn't expect to pay less than $8 per 400. Personally I've been known to charge $25 per piece, but that's for proffesional press releases etc.

Yeah 2 cents per word sounds fairer, for that it would have to be relatively interesting and grammatically correct, though at those prices it leaves nothing there for me, oh well, another business idea flies out the window

You should also consider the topics to be covered. If it requires research then you should be ready to cough up more dough.

Hm.... well i do stories and articles for 2$ 2000 words and so on and i try to get them correct as possible. I am currently working for an game textbased game owner who wants me to make some missions. I hate those people who post something that's incorrect and ask for money. But you cant just blame them you also should give a part of the blame to those who hire them and to those who hire and dont even pay even though its a good story/article (like i had to experience my worst nightmare writing romance and not getting payed )

Anywhere from $35/article to $400/article depending on the topic, how much research is required by the writer to write a good article, and how in depth and technical the article needs to be.

Its definitely feasible, what I did back in Spore is that I got connected with people in the british and u.s. embassy and got some of the expatriates spouse to write for me at a meagre $8 per article. The quality was fantastic. In other words get those native english speaking writers in your own country, chances are they will price their services according to local conditions, if you get what I mean....my 2 cents.

I charge between £0.05 and £0.10 per word. This price is higher than others, but my writing reflects this.

OK 5 to 10pence a word sounds good, something like that the customer would expect something good and the writer can justify spending time on creating something good, I shall give this idea some more thought, most of the English teachers here earn around $1,000 per month in basically a job they hate.

5-10 pence is good, but there are many others out there that, due to competition, write really well but charge 50-75 pence for 100 words.

Well, it depends on how good your <link drop removed> articles are! Normally, I pay $1.5-$3 for 1000 words
