With regards to seo (rather than just personal pride) is there any real advantage in going to the trouble of writing longer (eg 500 words) articles when some directories will accept 300 word ones?

Do search engines give more weight to links from long articles or is a link an link and the quicker you can write the article the better?

Writing "articles" is NOT a "SEO Concern".

You should be writing articles for USERS

You should keep in mind that quality in far more important than quantity. A quality articles will bring in more readers but a lengthy and boring article won't.

people can get bored with useless article writing and article marketing, if you are only using and creating your article for marketing purpose.

But there are times when visitors need full information about the certain product and then you can use the articles much longer than mere 500 words or so to satisfy all their needs.

Its all depends on the guidelines of the directory if good directory wants article of 500 words we must write and submit the article.

Longer articles are not that attractive in terms of reading so keeping in mind user perspective article should be somewhere between 300-400 words.
Thanks for different perspective.

Article is more important even it is short or long. Every article must contain minimum 500 words to submit. Benefit of adding article is that you could drive visitors reading the article to your site by links. The article should be related to your site content.

In writing an article, you must always remember that you are more likely targeting users. So in this matter, writing a very long article will get your readers bored unless you have a very interesting article.

As long as you can keep your readers interested then I say make the article as long as you want to If you really like writing long essays then maybe you should consider making some ebooks.

Length does matter in some ways and has impact in accordance with your performance. The better content that has fluency and style can make great impact so if your articles have some meat the lengthier the better but if it happens otherwise you will become under hammer.
