What are the laws regarding quoting articles on a website page or forum post? If there's a link back to the original website (whether its a blog or an actual news website) and the text is in quotes or something, is it allowed?

I would like to quote various articles (either in full or in part) on my site, but I don't know what the rules are

Check the source: see what restrictions they place. Check also that they own the content!

In general, short quotations are allowed - they should always be attributed and usually linked to the source.

Quoting in full is often illegal and always bad - Google has just undertaken a huge exercise to remove duplicated content so now is a bad time to be going down that road. "In part" tends to really mean "most of" - bad. Substantial chunks = duplicated content = Google clobbering you.

Check copyright and Fair use laws (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use). You should be fine if you quote one paragraph and then link to the original article, like all the news aggregator sites do.

Nope the best thing is not to steal articles in the first place.

But if you are quoting from a source, you should attribute the source,

A: because it is not your work in the first place.

B: because it gives the quotation original CONTEXT, whereas you may be taking the quote out of context and thereby altering it's meaning.
