I have been looking into the whole Google+ authorship thing by adding rel=author to posts, and that is something I need to look into further.

However, what is a business website supposed to do to protect its content?
If we have 100% original content, is there any way to "register" it so that the search engines know that our site is the origin of this particular content?

I can't stop a scraping from copying our original content, but if there were someway to convey to the search engines that this content originated from our website, then it would discount any other instances of that content found on other websites.

Not as yet, maybe one day there will be and the rel="author" attribute is one step along that path.

Just follow some steps to register your content as a original in google database, First create a handwritten content and then publish it on your site, Go to google and submit your site URL in google and then after sometime copy the content and paste it in google. if u found only one link and that's of your site then your site will be a origin of that content for lifetime.

You can register a copyright of the content...and make sure to tell people your content is copyrighted!
