Notice that in Internet Explorer, there's an extra line between the orange nav bar and the main content header ("home")? That's not happening in Safari or Firefox. Does anyone know why?

The problem is your clearing <div>.
Add the following rules to the .clear class:

margin:0;
font-size: 1px;
line-height: 0;

The extra space will close. It's usually not recommended that you stick a div in just to clear a float. I usually use a <br> with a class and the rules above in addition to the 2 you already have. It's cleaner and more semantically acceptable than a <div>
