it works fine in IE, but in FF the spans just dont show up.

HTML Code:
<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>New Layout</title>
<style type="text/css">
body{background-color: #829564}

span.top{
background-color: #A5BB85;
width: 800px;
height: 90px;
}

span.top2{
background-color: #829564;
width: 765px;
height: 30px;
}

span.mid{
background-color: #A5BB85;
width: 750px;
height: 400px;
}

</style>
</head>

<body>

<center>
<span class="top"></span>
<span class="top2"></span>
<span class="mid"></span>
</center>

</body>

</html>

spans are inline elements that DO NOT take heights and widths, they only take up as much or as little space as the content in them.

just something else that IE gets wrong in "quirksmode"

IF you are going to test in IE always, always, always use a doctype to make sure it almost behaves correctly (or less badly).

So what can I use in place of span? Something that can be sized and colored, and has things inside. Is tables the only other option?

Your CSS does work in Firefox. It's broken in IE.
