Once in a while, there is a momentous occasion, in which two sets of code, from opposite ends of the political spectrum, fight it out in an attempt to make history.
http://www.barackobama.com/index.php
http://www.johnmccain.com/
I had to include the /index.php on the first one, to avoid the annoying redirect that begs for money.

The two candidates sport well designed, interactive, database driven, multimedia websites. Their code is much different, however.

Obama:
  • Very clean, <div> and <li> driven code, with minimal tables.
  • XHTML Transitional
  • Uses the Jquery Javascript library
  • Conditional Comments for different browsers
  • Suckerfish Dropdowns - work with Javascript disabled
McCain:
  • Table based, "conservative" layout
  • HTML 4.01 Transitional (ouch)
  • Multiple Javascript libraries that I've never heard of
  • No Conditional Comments
  • Dropdowns don't function with Javascript disabled
Obama is clearly winning the code contest.

Interesting indeed, though honestly, I'm not surprised. I would also not be surprised if McCain's site is a re-cycle from his last run for Prez - the code is that old !

This is almost certainly true. According to the Web Archive, McCain's site was first constructed in 1999, while Obama's was not put up until 2004.

The Obama site definitely has a cleaner look and feel to it.. Good work there..

The mcCain site.. well only thing with it is the single page load sequence that is a byproduct of tables.. tolerable.. but still not as nice as Obamas.
