Its to do with you giving the sidewrap div an absolute position. Clearing doesn't work to well with absolute positioning. Better off to keep it relative. You've got the sideads and the sidewrap in seperate divs, but you could have one div to surround them both and float that left of the main content. Then your footer will clear

Agreed, float the side bar stuff, clear the float in the footer (set clear:both on it) and the footer should go where it belongs. There's no good reason that you need to use position absolute for that layout.

I thought of that, too, and it worked to clear the footer, but then the sidebars were shoved all the way to the bottom.

I ended up undoing a whole lot of the css file, up to when the footer was still positioned properly, and reworking the rest of the file to get everything else right (and ending up with the sidebar wrap relative positioned). As far as I can tell, everything is good!
