.leftcolumn {
float: left;
width: 25%

<div class="leftcolumn">column 1</div>
<div class="leftcolumn">column 2</div>
<div class="leftcolumn">column 3</div>
<div class="leftcolumn">column 4</div>

this will put your content into columns, toggle with the width to suit your needs .
I hope it helps
what do you do if you need a more detailed position then either : left, center, right?

hum I am not entirely sure what you mean, if you want a space between the columns you can add a margin like margin: 1px 2px 3px 4px, would give a margin of top: 1, right: 2, bottom: 3 and left 4, toggle with these to get the column where you want.

what i mean is:
If you look at the picture of my website on the first post, you will see that there are a lot of detail making up the background. Right now there are images and cells alll over the place, one right next to another. How do i position things appropriately without using a table?

your website isn't as much as a nightmare as you think, by looking at it i can see you can split your site into 3 columns, the left will have blocks under it, then add a bottom to the top and right, on the right column do an internal block with a border-top of what it is, the middle block you can add a background of the grey then give it a padding of say 10 and your happy as larry.

It is really easy, look at the quick wireframe i did, the white lines symbolise columns, the red symbolises blocks I would do it for you but it would be best if you learned how to.

I hope this helps.
