Float: left not working in IE 6

Okay, I haven't done a full check yet, but I know IE6 screws up with my left pane that I've moved to the left using float: left.

Attached is a screenshot of what it looks like in IE6 (I'm guessing most people on here don't use such a stone-age browser anymore )

Also, why are my png-24's looking so bad? They're not supposed to have gray backgrounds, they're clear...

Oh yes, the website url is http://www.thewriterscoop.org/

Thanks for all help!!

IE6 doesn't handle alpha transparency in PNG see - http://www.webmaster-talk.com/html-f...tml#post404167

You would be surprised, I have IE6 and cannot "upgrade" (though I'm not sure IE7 is much of an upgrade) because I run Windows 2000.

Probably the infamous doubled-margin bug

Still looking at he css for your content getting pushed down... But the png won't work in IE6 since it doesn't support png transparency unless you use a fix. I use the one here:
http://labs.unitinteractive.com/unitpngfix.php
There are other fixes too.

IE6 may be an ancient browser, and some refuse to make alterations for it, but it does get used still so I continue to make minor adjustments from time to time to make things work in IE6.

I guess I just needed to give IE some room. It didn't like the fact that I had calculated the pixels to be exact. I gave it 10 pixels worth of blank space and voilą, problem solved.

As for the png problem, I didn't know about it! :P Thanks. How do I make it work in iE 4, 5 and 5.5 too?

It will be more hasstle than its worth to make it backward compatible to i.e. 4. take a look at http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp will tell you what browsers are used

Not quite.
It will tell you what browsers are used by the visitors to W3Schools, which is most definitely NOT an average site.

YOU should do your own research on your own sites to find out what browsers are used by your target audience.

Yes! This is very easy to do and is absolutely necessary if you are having browser compatibility issues. If you are working with a new site you may not have much (or any) traffic though, so in that case you have to rely on another source of information.

Frankly, I wouldn't waste a lot of time making the site compatible all the way back to IE4, the usage of even 5.5 is so very small that you'd be banging your head against a wall trying to make that look good. Best you can do is have it degrade as gracefully as possible. Even an old Win98 machine can run IE6!

Okay then, I will take the advice and not worry about IE 5. Chrishirst, I was only curious, and yes IE 6 is stone age. :P

Good Point.
After looking around, I found that Wikipedia (surprisingly enough!) had a pretty good section on web browser usage, showing the statistics of many different websites, including also the 'global' W3counter, which I would also believe is quite accurate. But sadly to say, the stat average as far as I've seen, is about 60% IE.
