Can I have a div element with a fixed width, but minimum height? I want to do more fluid layouts, but I want the content to be a fixed width, and the height can grow if the text is resized, if this makes any sense. Also I am having a repeating background.

Yes. Just be aware that IE6 does NOT support min/max width or height, so you have to feed it a fixed height - which it will ignore and stretch anyway

If you want it to be fluid, make sure your widths are in percentages.

well, I was planning on having the width fixed, in px but hte height being variable, if I had to do a fixed height for ie6, would Ihave to have a seperate stylesheet for that browser with the alternate blocks in, or is there a way of doing it in one sheet?

All you need for IE6 is conditional comments in the <head> of your document to call a separate stylesheet that would contain ONLY the 'fixes' needed for IE6. You would NOT need a duplicate of your main stylesheet - and no, you do NOT want to do it all in one CSS file.
