Your first assumption - that IE is showing you the CORRECT behavior - is flawed - because even IE7 is nowhere near as standards-compliant as Firefox, Safari, or even Google Chrome!

You really do NOT want all that absolute and relative positioning, it's only going to CAUSE problems in IE - and it's unnecessary anyway. Learn to use the normal document flow.

If you want the whole thing centered, put a 'wrapper' div around everything else, set IT to position:relative, give it a defined width, then give it margin: 0 auto; to center the whole thing. Adjust the top and bottom margins to suit your needs.

Then you can use floats, margins and padding to get things to go where you want them inside the "wrapper".

i figured out why its got that extra space, ( ie7.firefox) im in the process of making a new layout design for my website right now and when i was messing around with css/xhtml i realized that my navbar was in an "unorder-list", and even though i had "{list-style-type: none}" the browser didnt show any bullets or markers but acted as if the list markers were still there, therefore pushing my content to the left even though in my mind i had it centered, but thanks guys for taking the time to help me out , greatly appreciated
