It's come to my attention today that my site doesn't view properly in 800x600 browsers - one of my visitors emailed me to tell me about the problem and I checked on http://viewlike.us . There is also a problem with iPhone and wii browser use, although I'm less bothered about fixing them, maybe they would fix themselves if I can get the 800x600 bit fixed?? My site is www.mymusictheory.com - the right hand edge bleeds over the edge into the background, making it unreadable.

So, this is a Joomla site, but I'm happy to hack my css files or whatever. I just have no idea how to a) work out what browser someone is using and then b)what to change in the css to solve the problem.

Any help would be very gratefully appreciated!

The percentage of users still using this display setting is quite miniscule. In fact, the growing 'standard' resolution is now above 1024x768! Frankly, I wouldn't waste a lot of effort trying to make your site work for such a very tiny percentage of users.

Fixing your site for iPhone users is far more important than 800x600, just look up media queries and the Safari developers guide on Apple's site. And no, fixing for 800x600 will not fix for the iPhone.

Is it that hard to do? I don't want to exclude anybody really!

Trying to include 100% users is almost impossible. Instead of focusing your efforts on the 1% of people, you should focus on improving your site for the other 99%.

For sure, 800 x 600 is on the way out, and mobile internet is the future, stick to the iphone users. But not every designer is concerned with iphones either.....not yet anyways

As a rule of thumb, or as I was once told anyway:

"It's best to design your website(s) at the lowest possible resolution that way you will maximise your viewing audience".

For example: If you develop your site at 800 x 600 resolution, that means all who view at that resolution or higher (1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024 etc..etc..) will see your site correctly.

As for a fix for your site, you will need to re-design all images, and generally, all pixel related measured items (ex: Table Code) , anything using percent (ex: Table = 100% should be ok.

Mobile versions of your website should be done completely outside of your 'regular' site because of how low of a resolution your using.

Hi,
This is because of your wrapper width
if you want your site to be visible in 800x600
browser then you must keep your wrapper width not more than 800px
check with your wrapper width and modify it then you can see the difference

This is not at all necessary. I suggest you read up on media queries and how they work.
